Too New to Tune? Not Anymore: Post-2020 Car Tuning and Remapping in South Wales

PaigeBy PaigeJuly 25, 2026

A few months ago, we would have had to turn this job away.

The vehicle in question was a 2024 Ford Transit Custom, presented to us by an owner from Bridgend. It was experiencing a running issue, had spent a significant portion of its operational life towing, and required enhanced performance. Improved fuel efficiency was also a top priority. There is nothing out of the ordinary in this scenario.

These are precisely the reasons why numerous Transit owners contemplate a remap. The challenge, however, was the van’s age.

At the time, its ECU and software were not supported by the professional tuning tools available to us. We could diagnose the vehicle, but there was no proven route into the calibration. Tuning it simply was not possible.

Fast-forward a few months, and that had changed.

New programming support gave us access to the ECU, enabling the Transit to be properly assessed and calibrated at our dyno tuning centre in Llandow. The running issue was resolved, the engine gained stronger and more useful torque for towing, and the calibration was optimised to improve real-world MPG.

The entire job was completed within a few hours.

That Transit is a good example of how quickly modern car tuning is progressing. Vehicles that were considered untuneable only months ago are now arriving in the workshop with supported ECU programming routes.

For owners of post-2020 cars and vans across Cardiff, Swansea and the rest of South Wales, it may be time to ask the question again.

Why were newer cars so difficult to remap?

The engines were never the main obstacle.

Modern turbocharged petrol and diesel engines often have considerable tuning potential. The difficulty was gaining reliable access to the software controlling them.

Manufacturers have introduced stronger ECU security over the past few years. Newer control units use protected software, encrypted communication and additional measures designed to prevent unauthorised programming.

A tuning tool might be able to identify the ECU and read diagnostic information without being able to access the calibration itself. In workshop terms, we could see the door, but we did not yet have the key.

That affected cars and vans from many major manufacturers. Some models remained tuneable, while others became much more difficult after a particular production date or software update.

It also explains why registration year alone never gives the complete answer. Two cars with the same engine and model badge can contain different ECU hardware. One may support normal programming, while the other needs a separate unlocking procedure.

A 2021 car is not an ECU type. The exact control unit and software version are what matter.

What has changed with post-2020 tuning?

Tuning equipment never stands still.

Tool developers continually research newer control units and release additional programming protocols. Support has recently expanded across several modern Bosch MD1 and MG1 ECUs, along with newer control units from Denso, Continental and other manufacturers.

Depending on the vehicle, an ECU may now be accessed through the diagnostic port, connected directly to bench equipment or unlocked using a more specialised process.

That does not mean every post-2020 vehicle is automatically tuneable. It means the number of supported cars and vans is growing rapidly.

It also means that an answer given six months ago may no longer be accurate today. If an owner was previously told that a vehicle was too new to remap, it is worth having the exact ECU checked again.

The 2024 Transit from Bridgend is proof of that. The van did not change. The available technology did.

Unlocking an ECU is only the start.

There is a big difference between gaining access to an ECU and knowing how to tune the vehicle properly.

An unlock allows the calibration to be read and written. The quality of the finished result still depends on the person carrying out the tuning.

Modern cars manage power through a network of connected systems. Boost pressure, fuel delivery, ignition, exhaust temperature, torque demand and gearbox behaviour all interact with one another.

Simply increasing a few targets can produce a larger number on a power graph, but that does not necessarily create a better car.

We have been tuning vehicles at Llandow since 2004, and our approach has always been to work with the vehicle in front of us. That matters even more with the latest cars.

Before tuning, we look at the condition of the vehicle, its fault history and the way it will be used. Diagnostic data and baseline testing help us understand how it is performing before the calibration is changed.

Once tuned, the vehicle can be logged and tested again. That gives us something far more useful than a guessed power figure: measured information from the actual car or van.

What does a good remap feel like?

Most road-car owners are not looking for a machine that only performs well at full throttle.

They want stronger response when pulling onto the motorway, more confidence when overtaking and an engine that does not need to be worked as hard during normal driving.

For a working van such as the 2024 Transit, useful torque matters far more than chasing a dramatic peak power number. When the vehicle is towing, carrying equipment or climbing a long gradient, a wider spread of torque can completely change how relaxed it feels.

The same applies to modern petrol cars. A carefully developed remap can improve throttle response, strengthen the mid-range and make the engine feel more willing without spoiling its everyday manners.

Automatic vehicles may also benefit from gearbox tuning where supported. Modern transmissions have their own torque limits and shift strategies, so the engine and gearbox sometimes need to be considered together.

The aim is not to make the car difficult to drive. It is to make the performance already hidden within the vehicle more accessible.

Stage 1 should suit the car, not just the badge.

Stage 1 is the term most owners recognise, but it is not a fixed technical standard.

For us, a Stage 1 remap is intended for a healthy vehicle running standard engine hardware. The final calibration still needs to account for the exact engine, ECU, fuel, gearbox and intended use.

A family car used for commuting does not need the same setup as a weekend performance car. A Transit used for towing needs a different style of torque delivery from a lightly loaded van.

That is why we do not treat every vehicle with the same engine as though it were identical. The badge may be the same, but mileage, software, mechanical condition and daily workload rarely are.

The owner of the 2024 Transit did not ask for an unrealistic horsepower figure. He wanted the running issue resolved, better towing performance and improved MPG. The calibration was developed around those requirements.

That is what custom tuning should mean.

Car tuning for Cardiff and Swansea drivers

Our dyno tuning centre is based in Llandow in the Vale of Glamorgan, where all tuning, diagnostics and development work is carried out.

We regularly see vehicles travelling from Cardiff, Swansea, Bridgend and throughout South Wales. Checking ECU compatibility before the appointment means we can explain the likely programming route and workshop requirements in advance.

Drivers searching for Cardiff ECU remapping and car tuning can check the services available for their vehicle before travelling to Llandow.

Owners coming from further west can do the same through our guide to Swansea car remapping and ECU tuning.

Bringing the vehicle to a properly equipped workshop means diagnostics, datalogging and dyno testing support the work. On a post-2020 car, that workshop capability is particularly valuable.

The latest ECU may require new programming technology, but the fundamentals of good tuning have not changed. Check the vehicle, understand what the owner wants, calibrate it properly and test the result.

Previously told that your car was too new?

Ask again.

Post-2020 tuning support is developing quickly, and the list of accessible ECUs continues to grow. Cars and vans that had no supported tuning route a few months ago may now be ready for programming.

The first step is to identify the exact vehicle, ECU and software version. From there, we can establish whether it can be tuned and what the job will involve.

Newer no longer automatically means untuneable. As the 2024 Ford Transit from Bridgend demonstrated, the technology has moved on—and modern vehicles are finally returning to the tuning workshop.
